The Angels of Mona Terrace

Have you ever played a game called Buccaneer? Each player has a little galleon and has to sail to Treasure Island to collect gold and diamonds and things. Then you have to make good speed to your home port before anybody attacks your ship and makes off with your booty. Mum got it from the church jumble sale for my birthday. A couple of rubies are missing otherwise it’s in really good nick.

I took it to school on the last day of term – we’re always allowed to play games on the final day. If somebody had told me then that during the holiday I really would be sailing to a faraway island, I’d have laughed. At the time I’d never been out of Manchester. Buccaneer was the closest I’d been to the sea!

If they’d tried to tell me the island was a secret place where people go after they’ve died, I’d have thought they were nuts. And when they went on to say I’d be staying there in a house run by a family of angels I would have smiled politely and waited for the men in white coats to come and take them away.

But that’s what really happened. I want to tell everybody about it, but perhaps I’m supposed to keep it hushed up. So I’ve decided to write it all down in a notebook. Everything. When I’ve finished I’m going to bury the book in my time capsule and leave it to chance. It might never be found and nobody will ever know. But, if you’re reading this, it has been found and my story can be told.

I’m writing it in September 1971. I wonder when you’re reading it. It really doesn’t matter when, I just want to tell you all about it...
